Include four scrapbooks, 1751-1930, including letters, plats, wills, indentures, deeds, photographs, business papers, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and Confederate currency and war bonds, most materials relating to the Bumgardner and Murphy families of Augusta County, Va., their estate, Bethel Green, and the slaves that worked on that estate. Represented most prominently in the scrapbooks are Jacob Bumgardner (1767-1857), James Bumgardner (1801-1890), John Bumgardner, James Bumgardner (1835-1917), and Patrick Livingston Murphy. Also include miscellaneous correspondence, 1805-1875, of the Bumgardner family, regarding family and financial matters, social life, and business matters of the family-owned distillery, J. Bumgardner Distillery Co., later called J. Bumgardner & Sons. Correspondents include Christian Bumgardner, Jacob Bumgardner (1767-1857), Jacob Bumgardner (1789-1840), James Bumgardner (1801-1890), James Bumgardner (1835-1917), John Bumgardner, and William Bumgardner. Also include account book, 1858-1864, of James Bumgardner's accounts with the Valley Bank of Staunton; and muster roll, 1778, of the Ninth Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army, commanded by Burgess Ball.
